The New “Cupcake”

By: Shivangi Kelkar

Have you eaten the next big thing in confectionery lately?

Macarons are the newest pastry to hit the market. Fox news even calls it ‘the next cupcake’! Not to be confused with macaroons (the coconut pastry), macarons are made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder, and food coloring. They are essentially meringue sandwich cookies of French descent.

Available in a variety of flavors and literally all colors of the rainbow, macarons appeal to many consumers, both young and old. These melt-in-your-mouth cookies have different fillings ranging from jams and ganache to buttercreme.

Although they have received some criticism from the food world, ranging from ‘not a people’s dessert since they’re too difficult to make at home’ to ‘do we need another cupcake?’, they are certainly growing in popularity.

And as one Fox reporter rightly sums up, ‘Customizable in a cavalcade of colors and flavors, and infused with that quintessential French jeu d’esprit, the macaron is poised as the newest “it” pastry!

Have you tried a macaron? What was the flavor combination? Do you see them as the new “it” dessert?
